A few quick checks you can do to diagnose a problem with your vehicles air-conditioning. Always check your air conditioning/heating with your engine running.
Inside vehicle
1) Does the blower fan work? Does the fan work on all fan speeds?
No/ The Air conditioning won't work without the blower fan in most vehicles. See technician.
2) Is the Air conditioning switch working? Does the switch illuminate when turned on?
No/ There maybe an electrical fault. See a technician.
3) Is there good Air Flow from the vents?
No/ Vents may be blocked or disconnected behind the dash board. See a technician.
4) Do all vent controls work? Ie: Face, Foot, Demist, Fresh Air/Recirculate.
No/ See a technician
5) Does the temperature change (Hot/Cold) when adjusted?
No/ Temperature not changing could indicate a fault with the heater tap, Hot/cold blend-door or controls. Your air conditioning may be working but heat is bleeding into the vent system causing the Air conditioning "coolness" to be cancelled out. See a technician.
Heating 1) Is there hot air coming from the vents when temperature is set to hot?
No/ Engine cooling system blocked, heater tap faulty, Hot /Cold flap blend -door or controller faulty, thermostat jammed open. See a technician.
Under Bonnet
6) Is the compressor engaging? Does the magnetic clutch pull in when the Air conditioning is switched on? You can usually hear a click noise from the compressor when the clutch engages.
No/ The Air conditioning system may be empty, lower refrigerant or an electrical fault. See a technician.
7) Is the suction Pipe at the firewall cold?
No/ If you feel the Air conditioning is not working efficiently. See a technician.
